How to prevent accidents with dogs and other pets in the lift?

As a resident (and one of the most beloved), dogs can use the lift. So, if you have a dog and live in a building with a lift, for your dog’s safety, be sure to read this publication. Learn how to access the lift safely with your pet and how to identify if the lift is equipped with safety elements to avoid accidents with your dog. If there’s one thing we care about, it’s the safety of you and your family. And, of course, that includes your pet, that loyal friend who is always by your side no matter what.

Did you know that, although they are not news, accidents with dogs in lifts are much more frequent than you think? We consider it essential for the machines to modernise and increase their safety systems to avoid any type of accident (remember that we work with the objective of ‘zero accidents’).

If you want to prevent your lift from becoming a danger for your pet, don’t worry, we’ll tell you how to avoid it below!

How to avoid risks for dogs in the lift according to regulations?

Goodbye photocells, hello infrared curtains! Newly installed lifts must have infrared curtains instead of photoelectric cells, which is a great advance in safety for users and for your pet, but, are there many machines that do not have this safety measure? Do you know what the differences are between them? We tell you about them and help you to identify them.

The photocells are positioned at a certain height on the lift door and detect obstacles in the path of the lift door only at that height. They do not detect obstructions above or below the infrared beam. This is a problem, as they do not prevent the door, when closing, from hitting what is outside the path of that beam. And the most affected are dogs crossing the door.

Moreover, these cells do not detect the leashes unless they coincide in cutting the beam of light, which poses a serious risk of accident for our pets. For example, if another user requests the lift from another floor and we are not with our dog on the same side in relation to the door, the doors will close and when the lift starts moving it will strangle it.

How do infrared lift curtains work to protect your pet?

In contrast, infrared curtains or barriers in lifts must cover from 25 mm from the cabin floor to 1600 mm in height and must be able to identify any obstacle with a diameter of more than 50 mm. In other words, they can detect smaller objects, such as a dog leash, and to a greater extent than current photocells.

The operation of both systems is identical: when a person or object is intercepted by one of the beams, the system reverses the movement and opens the door. But infrared curtains, because they detect a larger area, are the ideal solution for unexpected closures in cabins, when a dog may be inside the cabin and we are still on the landing or vice versa.

Tips for travelling in the lift with your dog and preventing accidents with pets

As every precaution is too little, we would like to give you a series of tips to ensure that your pet does not have an accident:

  • As far as possible, make sure that your furry friend passes to the back of the cabin and place yourself between him and the door.
  • Enter with your dog in your arms or close to you on a short leash.
  • Above all, make sure that the lead does not get caught in the door to avoid strangulation.
Keep an eye on your dog sign

But the best recommendation we give is to install infrared curtains in your lift, even if it is not a new installation, to increase its safety.
