Thyssen-Bornemisza National Museum

Architects: Mr Oriol Bohigas and Mr Francesc Pla
Construction company: Ferrovial Agroman

The works to renovate Villahermosa Palace, which would become the museum to house the Thyssen-Bornemisza collection of art, began in January 1990.

The challenge involved adapting the old palace, which was last used by the bank Banca López Quesada, to the conditions (lighting, safety, overloads, etc.) and services required by an art gallery.

Here we installed the following.

– 2 800kg-lifts (10 people) and 1 600kg-lift (8 people), whose cabins were designed by the architect on an ad hoc basis.

– 1 3,500kg-goods lift to transport works of art. It features special 3-metre-high doors, double boarding at 90º, 7 stops, a cabin speed of 1.0 m/s VVVF, and a cabin finished in special steel also designed by the architect.

– 1 600kg-panoramic hydraulic lift that connects the store to the cafeteria, whose glass panels are the structure..
