At FAIN Ascensores we were lucky enough to install 19 lifts in the W Barcelona Hotel (popularly known as ‘Hotel Vela’ – the Sail Hotel), one of the most iconic buildings in Barcelona.
You can imagine the dimensions of the project: our lifts (for guests, service, goods and other uses) had to reach its… 27 floors!
The building was designed by the architect Ricardo Bofill, whose initial project featured a tower in the shape of a sail that reached 168 metres. However, the City Hall forced the architect to modify this project to avoid altering Barcelona’s skyline, which had to be topped by the two towers of the Olympic Village. So, when the W Hotel was opened in 2009, it finally reached a height of 98.8 metres.
