I dropped my keys down the lift shaft, how do I get them back?

You’re rushing out of the house and, as you get into the lift, you’re unlucky enough to drop your keys down the lift shaft. Nervousness takes over and, as it’s your first time, you don’t know what to do to get them back…

It is very likely that, at some point, you have been the protagonist of a situation like this or you know someone who has been in this situation. In today’s post we want to tell you about the steps to follow and the alternatives that are available to you.

Do not attempt to retrieve the keys to the lift shaft yourself

With a magnet, a rope, a torch… the Internet can offer you many homemade tricks to try to recover them by yourself. But, for safety’s sake, you should never venture to do so. It would be extremely unwise, as these ‘methods’ do not meet the minimum safety requirements. As a result, you could damage the lift mechanism and even injure yourself.

Contact the maintenance company to retrieve the lift shaft keys

You can go to the building maintenance manager, so that they contact the company in charge of the maintenance of your lift and report that an object has fallen into the shaft.

If you want to avoid intermediaries, you can also call the company directly. You will probably find a sticker inside the cabin with the name and contact details of the company.

Is this service free of charge or is there an additional cost?

It all depends on how much of a hurry you are in to retrieve the object you have dropped. Once you have informed the maintenance company of the situation, there are two alternatives:

  • Free option: any object that has fallen down the lift shaft will be collected by the technician, free of charge, when he comes to carry out the maintenance work, which usually takes place every three months. Therefore, you must remain on standby and, if you are not at home at the time of delivery, the technician will leave the keys in a place agreed by both parties or in the custody of a community manager or worker (e.g. the caretaker).
  • Paid option: if you are in a hurry to recover the keys, there is the possibility of having a technician come to your property urgently on the same day. However, you should bear in mind that this will be a priority job that will be associated with an additional cost.

Whichever option you choose, we would like to insist that you do not try to recover them by yourself. Trust the professionals who are used to carrying out these tasks with all the security measures. It is not worth taking unnecessary risks!
